Juneteenth
In the days ahead, Pacific Seminary will energetically join the growing number of organizations recognizing Juneteenth as a national holiday. We are closing the seminary and requesting that our community celebrate this holiday through active engagement in an activity that will advance the cause of racial and ethnic equality.
This holiday honors the effective end of slavery in our nation by marking the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure the freedom of all enslaved people by enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation. By celebrating Juneteenth, we renew our commitment to establishing inclusive ministries and organizations. Like on the day of Pentecost, we strive to celebrate and now emulate that the Spirit of God speaks to us all in our own languages and into our cultures. We stand opposed to all forms of racism as we work for racial equality. Pacific will do all things possible to lean into the future reality described in Revelation 7:9, When the Apostle John observed a “great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands” together worshiping God. As we celebrate God’s design for diversity in all forms of creation, we remember that recognizing all forms of racism and working to extricate this evil is a way for us to “practice justice, love mercy, and humbly be led by God.”
Will you join us in this journey?
